The Pewsey Vale Railway Society is a diverse group of very friendly railway enthusiasts mainly resident in and around the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire: an area of lower lying ground between the chalk downs of Salisbury Plain to the south, and Marlborough Downs to the north. The area is essentially rural, with sheep on the high ground and arable farming down in the Vale. There are no major roads running through it but both the Kennet and Avon Canal and part (the Berks & Hants Extension) of the Great Western Railway main line from London to the South West lie along this route. At the western end is the town of Devizes, with Pewsey and Burbage being the next largest settlements further to the east. We have a common interest in all things related to railways. Many of our members have experiences and knowledge stretching back many years, with a small number from a life-time career on the railway. We meet every month of the year.
Our Society was started in the late 1980s. Following a particularly enjoyable one-off talk on local railway history, a group of people resolved to set about forming a local society to promote an interest in railways, whereby such interesting events could become a regular feature in the Pewsey Vale area. After using several other venues in the early years the Society was offered the use of Woodborough Social Club, and has been meeting there ever since, on every second Tuesday in the calendar month. January 2019 saw us celebrating our 30th anniversary. With that many years, and more, of monthly meetings behind us, backed by an enthusiastic membership, the Society continues to prosper.
We meet every month of the year with a programme of eleven meetings featuring a presentation by a speaker who is either a visitor or from our membership, plus our AGM held in January. Our programme page gives detailed information of this year's meetings. The Pewsey Vale Express our quarterly newsletter, is distributed at meetings and also viewable on this website. Our meetings, on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:45 pm, are held at Woodborough Social Club, Smithy Lane, Woodborough, Wiltshire, SN9 5PL. There is ample parking and meetings are held in a large hall with bar facilities. The meeting fee is £3.00, which includes a raffle ticket, and visitors are very welcome. Visitors may attend two meetings but would then be expected to join the Society (£7.50 per annum ordinary rate, £5 for seniors).
Woodborough Social Club, Smithy Lane, Woodborough, near Pewsey SN9 5PL. The village of Woodborough is on a minor road which leaves the A345, approximately 2 miles north of Upavon at the Woodbridge Inn roundabout (second exit), and joins the A4 about 3 miles west of Marlborough. On that road Woodborough is north of the railway line from Paddington and south of the Kennet and Avon Canal at Alton Barnes. Woodborough Social Club is in Smithy Lane which forms the western arm of the only crossroads in the village: to the right travelling south and to the left going north. Sat Nav: SN9 5PL.
